1 John 3:1 Devotional
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God. –I John 3:1
Have you ever had a friend whose friendship you doubted? Friends can be right next to you, but you can still doubt their sincerity and friendship. God isn’t like that though: we can be assured in his love though he may test us at times. Jesus tells us, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13). That is why we can be assured of God’s love for us. Jesus Christ was made man for the sole purpose of dying.
We all die, but most of us aren’t born into this world to die. We all have our own plans and purposes for life and it would be an insult to God’s creation to go out and die for the sake of dying. However, Christ is different. He was perfect, and able to atone for our sins and the sins of the world. However, just as I am capable of of throwing my body in front of an oncoming bus to save a friend, Christ didn’t have to come to earth to die for us. That was his choice and Jesus is right when he spoke that death for a friend is the highest visible evidence of friendship. He died for us that we may become the children of God.
Behold God’s love: a love that sacrificed a Son, a son that sacrificed a life, and a sanctifying work that continues in us. Yes we may doubt God’s love sometimes, but always remember that he did, does, and will always continue to love us. We are the children of God, let us appreciate the unprecedented gift bestowed to us.
